Squirrels can be adorable but also carry disease

Squirrels can be adorable little muses that whimsically entertain us from our kitchen window, or they can be a hairy nuisance that unapologetically wreaks havoc on our yards and our peace of mind.  For some people, it is difficult to tell if there is a squirrel problem in their area.  However, as most northern Virginia residents know, there is a thin line between having a couple cute yard pets and witness a complete takeover.  Because of this, it is important for folks to understand the top three signs that a squirrel problem is out of control, and to consider whether or not they need professional help.

Sign One:  It looks like a Squirrel Family Reunion Outside

If you take a look outside a window in your home and you see an abundance of squirrels, it could simply be a sign that the animals are enjoying your space for the moment.  However, if that is the case in your yard the majority of the time, then it is more likely a sign that you have an issue which would require professional assistance.  When a northern Virginia resident such as yourself peers out the window of your home and witnesses what seems to be a squirrel family reunion, it may be time for you to call in the troops for some help.

Sign Two:  Your Yard is Going Nuts

It is not a figment of your imagination.  If you are seeing a lot of nuts in your yard, it is a good sign that you have an issue with squirrels.  Considering that this is the main food choice for the average squirrel, witnessing an abundance of nuts is a sure sign that a large population is making a home in your yard.  This is especially true for those who have nut-bearing trees on their property, as these trees act as a natural attraction for several different squirrel species.

Sign Three:  There are Holes in your Story

You will want to check for holes in your yard while you are out assessing your squirrel situation.  If you find a bunch of suspicious hovels in the grass, especially near trees and low-lying shrubs, you likely have a serious issue.  Holes are indicative that the local squirrels are burrowing – a sure sign that they plan on staying until you seek professional help.
